Don’t give Dirty Hair a Bad Rep.

We have a bone to pick with whoever decided that dirty hair isn’t a good thing. Don’t get us wrong, hygiene is important and washing your hair when necessary is a must, but that doesn’t mean you need to overkill your scalp with shampoo.

A hair wash can last longer than just one day. In the hair world “2nd day hair” and even  “3rd day hair” is common. If you regularly get a professional shampoo and blow out your wash can last 2 extra days. If you are washing at home stick to  every other day for a wash.

Master stylist, Kimberlee Gast from Haven Salon and Spa shares her insider tips on dirty hair: “At first it might seem like your scalp is oily, but commit to a schedule and your body will begin to adjust. The natural oils from your scalp give your hair needed moisture and make it easier to style.”

Kim explains the other benefits of second day hair: “It’s a time saver, you can cut your morning routine down by not having to wash your hair in the shower or spend time blow drying it.”

Other added benefits include the break it gives your wallet. Wearing second day hair will help your color and your shampoo last longer.

Also, if you’re using the Aveda Invati products it is recommended by Aveda that you only wash every second or third day for best results.

Looking for second day hair styles? Going wash-free gives your hair extra volume, perfect for a pony with some lift. It is also a great time to wear a messy braid. If you want to style your hair down add a few curls to the ends — everyone will be fooled that you didn’t spend hours doing your hair.

And Kim’s personal favorite, hair accessories. Just because you’re recycling a wash doesn’t mean that you need to reuse the same hairstyle. Headbands are a fun way to spice up your outfit and are affordable. Kim gets hers from anywhere and everywhere, especially Claires, H & M, and Charlotte Russe.

Redefine the bad rep. that dirty hair has and embrace the variety that you can add to your style by not being a slave to daily hair washing.

Best Blow Out Secrets

Alyssa Kolsky Hertzig, Contributing Executive Beauty Editor for Allure Magazine shares her Blow Out Tips in “Surprising Tricks for Making a Blow Out Last.” We agree with Hertzig and want to share our own beauty secrets so you can get the most out of your blowout.

Tip 1:

Practice pre-emptive dry-shampooing: Don’t wait until a day or two after your blowout, when you’re already greasy, to take action. Hairstylist Theodore Leaf recently taught me to spritz a little dry shampoo at the roots immediately after a blow-dry. “Dry shampoo is my little insurance policy,” he says. “Put it on so it can soak up oil before it happens.”

Haven: We love bumble and bumble hair powder. It soaks up the natural oil and adds extra volume!

Tip 2:

Sleep right: Eight hours of being smooshed on a pillow can murder your blowout. Beauty news editor Heather Muir preserves hers by sleeping with her hair twisted into two Princess-Leia-style buns. I like to pull mine into a low ponytail, secured with a loose scrunchie. (Don’t judge—they may not be cute, but they’re much less likely to leave dents than hair elastics.)

Haven: Make sure you don’t pull your hair back too tight or you will loose all the volume

Tip 3:

Protect it from the elements at all costs: Rain is your blowout’s mortal enemy so avoid it if you can. Editorial Assistant Catherine O’Neill even wears one of those old-school plastic bonnets: “I look like a grandma running through Manhattan, but there’s a reason Grandma’s hair always looked so good, right?”

Haven: Avoid the humidity. Use your umbrella. If your winter coat has a hood, put that bad boy on.

Tip 4:

Touch it up. Even the best blowouts usually require a few minutes of freshening each morning. If things start to look puffy, I pull out my blowdryer and round brush and perfect just the front and top sections. (I’m less worried about the underside—no one really sees it anyway.) If the blowout has started to get curly, I use a one-inch curling iron to add random looses waves all over my head. (The curling iron also helps to tamp down any frizz that has cropped up.) And if all else fails, I pull my hair back into a ponytail and flat iron just the ends, for an easy, sleek look.

Haven: Keep prep or tonic on hand. Mist your hair and blow dry  in all directions, the product used for your original blow out has memory and will bring your style back to life.
